Myrtle Beach has long been a favorite for vacationers from all over the United States, Canada and beyond and over that time Myrtle Beach has grown every year to become the most popular vacation destination on the east coast. 2010 introduced the heralded Myrtle Beach Boardwalk and 2011 appears to be a banner year in bringing a wide variety of new attractions, shows and more to Myrtle Beach, creating even more excitement for the coming year.
Check out the following exciting new things coming to the beach:
• Pirate's Voyage - Dolly Parton's long running Dixie Stampede is getting overtaken by pirates as the theater receives a whopping $11 million transformation. Pirate's Voyage is set to open in June of 2011 and will also be a dinner show like the Dixie Stampede did. Guests will experience the spirit and swashbuckling excitement of the pirates who called the Carolina coast home. The Crimson and Sapphire pirates battle each other on deck, in the water and in the sky above their full sized pirate ships in a 15-foot-deep indoor lagoon to the cheers and delight of their fans in the arena.
• Myrtle Beach SkyWheel - The 175 foot tall oceanfront SkyWheel is set to open in May, 2011 adjacent to the new Myrtle Beach Boardwalk. The SkyWheel will resemble a traditional ferris wheel, though its size will dwarf virtually all other rides of its kind in the United States. The wheel has been specifically designed to include 42 glass-enclosed, temperature controlled gondolas that could hold six to eight people.
• Wonderworks - After opening a Zipline and Ropes course in 2010, Wonderworks will complete the attraction in Spring, 2011. Called an "amusement park for the mind," Wonderworks brings its combination of education and entertainment to Broadway at the Beach in over 100 hands-on exhibits that will spark the imagination and stimulate the mind. Visitors to the attraction will enjoy a variety of experiences including being blown away by 74 mile per hour hurricane-force winds, maneuvering the controls of a NASA spacecraft to land the shuttle, lying on a bed of 3,500 nails, piloting a fighter jet, designing and riding a 360 degree virtual roller coaster, playing virtual sports and competing in a game of lazer-tag.
• Jimmy Buffett's Land Shark Bar & Grille - Following the overwhelming success of his popular Margaritaville Restaurant at Broadway at the Beach in Myrtle Beach, music legend Jimmy Buffett is bringing the Land Shark Bar & Grille to Myrtle Beach just off of the Boardwalk area near the aforementioned Myrtle Beach SkyWheel.
• Hooray for Hollywood at The Palace Theatre - The Palace Theatre has long been home to some of the most popular Broadway-style entertainment found anywhere and now Hollywood takes the stage at The Palace with Hooray for Hollywood, a new production featuring the most famous song and dance moments over the last 50 years of movie history. You will see film clips of your favorite movies, and then watch the action unfold, live on stage, as our wonderful cast of singers and dancers are joined by an eight piece live band.
• Legends In Concert - While the Legends In Concert tribute show has been a Myrtle Beach area favorite for a number of years, the show is making a move to the Broadway at the Beach area of Myrtle Beach in the space formerly occupied by Club Kryptonite, making the theater far more accessible to thousands of Myrtle Beach visitors. The hit show will continue its current format where five celebrity tribute acts ranging from Madonna to the Blues Brothers to Elvis to Cher and many others will rotate performances each night.
• Major League Baseball in Myrtle Beach - Professional baseball is no stranger to Myrtle Beach, with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans embarking on their 13th season of minor league baseball at BB&T Coastal Field. This year however the Pelicans have taken on a new affiliation with the American League champion Texas Rangers, and the Rangers are headed to Myrtle Beach to to play an exhibition game on March 29 at Coastal Field against Coastal Carolina University. Big league stars such as Todd Hamilton and former Pelican Elvis Andrus will bring a level of professional baseball never seen before in Myrtle Beach.
• The Pat Boone Theater - The recently announced theater opening will reside near Broadway at the Beach at the area formerly occupied by the Nascar Cafe and will feature a variety of live entertainment. The first act to sign with the theater is illusionist Morgan Strebler, who was given the 2011 Merlin Award, one of magic's top awards with past winners including David Copperfield and Siegfried & Roy. Strebler will perform 500 shows in 2011.
