While the spotlight at the Hootie and the Blowfish Monday After the Masters celebrity golf event normally shines on stars such as former NFL greats Dan Marino and Gale Sayers, golfers Annika Sorenstam and Chris DiMarco and entertainers Kevin Sorbo, Branford Marsalis and of course Hootie lead singer Darius Rucker, it was the five members of the Salute Military Golf Association who stirred emotions at the Dye Club at Barefoot this Monday. The wounded veterans who belong to the SMGA were invited by the event hosts in order to raise awareness of this fantastic organization and to help raise money for them.
The Salute Military Golf Association (SMGA) was created by former PGA Tour professional Jim Estes as a way to improve both the mental and physical condition of wounded soldiers through overcoming injuries and achieving in the game of golf. Check out a story done on the SMGA for NBC Nightly News last year:
We were very fortunate to be able to be the host of the five inspiring members of the SMGA at Ocean Creek. While there are so many little things in life that worry us and get us down, these injured veterans who arrived at our resort smiling and with great attitudes, were an inspiration to all of us at Ocean Creek and to the thousands who were in attendance at Hootie and the Blowfish's Monday After the Masters.
